SatireLocal BJJ White Belt Promoted To "Pantone 292 C," Immediately Suspects Coach Is Questioning His Masculinity
Instructor insists the exact shade of blue was a matter of supply chain logistics, not a subtle jab at student's grappling vigor.
NEW HAVEN, CT – After years of dedicated training, countless hours spent drilling techniques, and surviving innumerable submissions, local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner Jim Flanagan, 34, finally received his highly anticipated blue belt on Monday.
However, the jubilant occasion was quickly overshadowed by a gnawing sense of unease when his instructor presented him with a light blue belt (specifically designated as "Pantone 292 C").
Flanagan, a self-described "man's man" who works in heavy machinery repair, told reporters he initially thought sifu might just be fucking with him.
"It's just, you know, a bit lighter than I anticipated," Flanagan explained, his eyes wandering to a fellow student's belt in a deep indigo.
Julie Huang, a purple belt present for Flanagan's promotion saw the whole thing.
“He kept looking at his belt, then at the others’ blue belts, then back at his belt.
"I thought maybe he was in shock or something, you know overwhelmed with emotion because not a lot of people make it to blue... In retrospect, perhaps he was just pre-visualizing himself in tomorrow's pre-roll lineup."
The color "Pantone 292 C" is officially described as a bright, medium-light blue, a hue that Flanagan feels is suspiciously less "navy" or "royal" than what he had envisioned for his hard-earned milestone.
"I busted my butt, got cauliflower ear, smelled like an old gym sock for three years, all for this? It looks like the color of a baby boy's swaddle cloth," he lamented, inspecting the fabric with a look of deep suspicion.
Ricky Slaughter, head instructor at "The Submission Sanctuary" academy, denied any intent to humiliate Flanagan or put his masculinity in question.
"Look, we just got a bulk order in from a new supplier," Coach Slaughter explained, shrugging. "They had a great deal on a particular lot of light blue belts.”
However, Flanagan remains unconvinced.
"It's like coach is trying to send me a message, man," Flanagan insisted, gesturing with his new, pastel-adjacent blue belt.
"My wife laughed when she saw it. She said, 'really brings out the blue in your eyes.' What am I supposed to do with that? Start accessorizing? This isn't a fashion show, it's a fight school."
Flanagan is considering saying his gym bag was stolen, that he lost it or purchasing a separate, darker blue belt altogether and subtly swapping it out, hoping the academy's notoriously poor lighting will obscure the change.
