Minnesota Senior Successfully Campaigns For Law Allowing Herself To Change Her Own Diaper During Happy Hour

ST. PAUL, MN – Following a tireless year-long campaign, 92-year-old Agnes Periwinkle of the Whispering Pines Assisted Living Facility has successfully lobbied Minnesota lawmakers to pass legislation granting residents the right to perform their own incontinence care during designated happy hour events. The bill, colloquially known as 'Agnes's Autonomy Act,' passed overwhelmingly in both chambers and was signed into law by Governor Tim Walz on Thursday.

Periwinkle, a former librarian with a steely resolve, initiated her crusade after a particularly humiliating incident during a 'Margarita Mondays' event last spring. "I was mid-quip about the rising cost of Metamucil, and suddenly, the staff descended upon me like I was a malfunctioning Roomba," Periwinkle recounted from her meticulously organized apartment, a faint scent of lavender and mothballs lingering in the air. "They whisked me away, mid-anecdote! All I wanted was to manage my own bodily functions without interrupting my social calendar or, more importantly, losing my spot at the bingo table." she added, adjusting her bifocals.

The new law stipulates that while staff must still be present to monitor for 'systemic failures' or 'catastrophic breaches,' residents who demonstrate the 'cognitive and manual dexterity necessary' can now self-administer adult undergarment changes in a designated, yet open-plan, 'privacy alcove' adjacent to the recreational hall's cash bar during advertised happy hour times.

"This isn't about promoting a free-for-all," stated State Representative Donna Hingham (D-Maple Grove), chief sponsor of the bill. "This is about dignity. Our seniors built this state, and they deserve the right to enjoy a discounted chardonnay without feeling infantilized by a rushed diaper change. It's a small concession for a monumental step towards empowering our elderly to own their golden years, even if those golden years involve a few leaks." Hingham declined to comment on reports of the legislative session being briefly halted due to an unexpected 'wet spot' on the Speaker's podium.

Opponents, primarily consisting of younger residents and marketing executives from competing care facilities, expressed concerns. "While I understand Agnes's desire for independence, seeing Mildred L. attempting to re-fasten her Depends while I'm trying to enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free gin fizz is, frankly, disquieting," remarked 78-year-old Walter Pringle, a self-proclaimed 'happy hour regular' at Sunshine Peaks Retirement Community. "Some things, darling, are best done behind a closed door, or at the very least, after last call." Pringle concluded by suggesting the state instead focus on legalizing competitive bingo payouts.

Agnes Periwinkle, for her part, remains undeterred by the controversy. She is reportedly already drafting legislation to permit residents to choose their own catheter styles without administrative approval, citing a personal preference for 'the one with the little duckies.'
