DSA Youth Chapter Plays Berlin Wall Footage Backward To Show Workers Fleeing Capitalism

MADISON, WI — A local DSA youth chapter resolved an awkward discrepancy in its political education seminar Thursday by playing Berlin Wall footage backward showing East Germans appearing to flee capitalism.

The correction followed several uncomfortable minutes in which attendees watched East Germans pour westward in 1989, contradicting a slide titled “People Will Always Choose Economic Justice.”

“Our generation isn’t burdened by Cold War propaganda,” said chapter education coordinator Jian Stroh, 21, dragging the playback slider toward the beginning. “We’re able to look at these events with fresh video settings, er... I meant fresh eyes.”

The revised presentation showed jubilant workers retreating from Western consumer abundance and goods, backing through checkpoints, and helping authorities reconstruct the notorious barrier.

Members were particularly moved by footage of citizens carefully returning chunks of concrete to the wall, which organizers described as grassroots investment in public infrastructure.

Ronda Perez, 20, who developed the chapter’s approved discussion prompts, said the original video had lacked essential context, including who uploaded it and why everyone was running toward the wrong economic system.

“My grandfather keeps saying he actually lived through this,” Perez said while sipping an organic matcha tea and casually checking Instagram. “But I don't think he's really understands our slides.”

The chapter subsequently removed a proposed discussion of exit restrictions because no one could explain why a workers’ paradise required permission to leave, not to mention the snipers, attack dogs and minefields.

The final slide showed crowds dispersed, checkpoints seemingly peaceful and nobody publicly complaining.
