Satire‘I’m Like You,’ Says Man Who Misplaced 5,000-Bottle Capacity Wine Cellar
Governor Gavin Newsom, facing questions about his lavish Sacramento-area home, says forgetting a climate-controlled subterranean wing is "the kind of thing that happens when you're busy serving people."
FAIR OAKS, Calif. — California Gov. Gavin Newsom further deepened his bond with everyday citizens on Thursday by revealing a struggle that is all too familiar to millions of Americans: he often forgets things.
For instance, he owns a 12,000-square-foot house and admitted he cannot account for every room…
Indeed, when asked about the 5,000-bottle wine cellar featured in the real estate listing for the $7.5 million Sacramento-area mansion, Newsom appeared briefly startled...
“Are you serious? Really?” he said. “I literally didn’t even know. I guess I never filled it...? By the way, I put books in there.”
Aides later clarified that the books were his “only inheritance,” that the bottles in the listing photos were “contextual,” and that forgetting a climate-controlled subterranean wing is “the kind of thing that happens when you’re busy serving people.”
Newsom’s bond with the common man is truly one of his greatest strengths.
Earlier this year in Atlanta, the governor told Mayor Andre Dickens and a book-tour audience, “I’m like you. I’m no better than you. I’m a 960 SAT guy,” and added that voters had never seen him read a speech because he cannot read a speech.
“I’m not trying to impress you,” Newsom said, recycling the Atlanta line. “I’m just trying to impress upon you that I, too, have been in a house and thought, whose house is this?”
Critics noted that the house is his, that he is a co-founder of a wine and hospitality company, and that “I put books in there” is an unusual use of a 5,000-bottle capacity wine cellar.
Supporters called that missing the point.
“Someone who says he's unaware of owning a 5,000 bottle capacity wine cellar and that he's more of a "books guy" is someone who's saying I'm fallible... Fallible people forget what is in their basements, fallible people score a 960 on the SAT."
Voters, Newsom suggested, will look past this... That room is definitely not for wine.
