SatireBitwise CIO Sends Heartfelt Gift Basket to Hardware Wallet Makers for Unmatched ETF Promotional Support
Crypto asset manager praises self-custody firmware disasters for doing more to drive investors toward regulated funds than a billion-dollar ad spend.
SAN FRANCISCO – Bitwise Asset Management Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan personally sent commemorative fruit baskets to executives at hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor this week, thanking the firm for its inadvertent, but effective, promotional campaign in favor of spot bitcoin ETFs.
The high-profile self-custody-related catastrophes, including Coldcard’s recent firmware entropy failure and Trezor’s string of marketing platform breaches, continue to persuade thousands of sovereign cryptocurrency purists that holding their own private keys was perhaps an unnecessarily thrilling hobby.
"We budgeted roughly forty million dollars for traditional digital advertising this fiscal year," said Marisol Cortez, Bitwise’s managing director of digital asset marketing.
"As it turns out, we could have just saved that money and just waited for hardware wallet providers to do their thing.
"Very few things sell a 20-basis-point custodial fee like watching your PII get spread all over the internet, or your sovereign wealth vanish, because you chose to hold your own keys."
Financial analysts note that Wall Street’s institutional apparatus could never have designed an ex ante strategy capable of matching the sheer customer conversion rate generated by paranoid cypherpunks accidentally losing their life savings.
According to reports, Blackrock's IBIT exchange-traded fund (ETF) experienced record retail inflows immediately following reports that Coldcard users were subjected to device entropy using compromised pseudorandom number generators.
"Every time a self-styled sovereign individual loses faith in a hardware wallet's RNG scheme, considers a titanium punch plate for their seed phrase, or needs a degree in cryptography or embedded hardware security to sleep well at night, an angel on our trading floor gets its wings," Cortez added.
Trezor’s two data leaks within one week were particularly impactful for Bitwise's AUM with executives noting that 3rd party leaks of customer home addresses directly to offshore extortion rings provided an organic, grassroots urgency that legacy financial marketing simply cannot manufacture.
At press time, Hougan conveyed his mixed feelings about the hardware wallet failures because he believes deeply that bitcoin's self-custody characteristics can be extremely useful.
"This is a Pyrrhic victory for Bitwise... I mean, yeah, we'll take the win, but I'm certainly sighing about it..."
